Extremely rare antique opium paste container made of buffalo horn. The cylindrical container is hollowed out from the thickest part of a buffalo horn. It was used to contain opium paste. Opium was introduced into China in the 15th century.
It was used as a recreational drug by the rich due to it's rarity and cost. Buffalo horns are porous but amazingly the opium smell which is very pungent does not permeate to the outside. You can however smell the opium when you open the container. Condition as shown in photos. The battery is there for size comparison only. It has nothing to do with the item. Most of my collection is one of a kind. I bought the items because I liked it for myself. They were never intended to be resold.
