Extremely Rare Antique Chinese Painting On Temple Yuanbao c1780s Framed

Extremely rare antique Chinese painting on temple yuanbao paper. The painting is of a woman immortal holding a magical fly swat. The immortal is wearing a traditional Chinese costume over a pair of dotted pants. Small hands and small feet that looked like bound feet.

The colour used are mineral colours including cobalt and they were not prone to attract insects hence the excellent condition of the painting. The painting was a temple painting painted on the special yuanbao paper.

The painting would have been used as display on an altar table and held by two sticks of bamboo skewers. Yuanbao paper were used to burn as offerings.

They were sometime folded into shapes of bullions hence the name yuanbao. Because they were made of paper and used in temples near burning candles and joss sticks they seldom survived.

This one has some burnt marks and some yellowing from heat. The surrounding paper has disintegrated somewhat. I have had it restored by professional Chinese restorer in the 1960s. This painting was bought in Macau. It came from a demolished temple and a garbage collector picked it up. I acquired two of them and paid a princely sum for them. I had the painting restored in Hong Kong. The restoration process was interesting whereby the entire painting was peeled off from it's original backing and a new backing was put on. You will notice shreds of paper being glued back on the backing.

This was a delicate process and this kind of restoration art died with the last of restorers. No one wanted to do this kind of painstaking work. When I visited Hong Kong some 30 years ago I was not able to find any one who can do this kind of restoration. I had this painting framed with a natural bamboo frame under non reflective glass in Bangkok. The painting is in great antique condition.

The border has a bit of water stain from years of storage. I challenge you to find another one like this in the world. Measurement: 61 cm (L) x 39 cm (W) x 2 cm (H). The battery is there for size comparison only. It has nothing to do with the item.

Most of my collection is one of a kind. I bought the items because I liked it for myself.

They were never intended to be resold. Each item has a story and when possible I hand carried in my luggage from all over the world to bring back to Australia.

Some of the items have travelled a long way away and some of the items has been with me for 65 years. This painting cannot be combined with other items. It is important to have it pack properly to protect it. Thank you for your understanding.
