Year of Kuang Hsu (1904) Yunnan began to implement the Official Public Assayer system, which had since dominated the market for Saddle sycees until the 1th year of the Republic (1912). A New Study On Saddle Sycee. , Saddle sycee under the category of Official Public Assayer experienced 6 stages of the development throughout this 8-year period; each stage can be distinguished by the format of the assayer stamps that the Saddle sycee carries with, the vast majority of the Official Public Assayer Saddle sycees found today are early specimens (1th to 3rd period) made between 1904 and 1907. Starting from the 33th year of Kuang Hsu (1907) the Official Public Assayer saddle sycees entered into a declining stage followed by a government plan for the establishment of a modern mint in Yunnan for producing machine struck coins, which would then become the new standard currency to substitute the traditional sycee ingots.
The item shown above is a specimen of the 6th period (also known as the Dated type), which is the very last kind of the Official Public Assayer's Saddle sycee cast in Kunming city. In 1910, in order to ensure Saddle sycee strictly meet its required purity standard, the Provincial Board of Revenue carried out a new policy that all Saddle sycee cast after the 1st day, 2nd month, the 2nd year of Hsuan Tung (1910) would have to be dated with year and month of manufacture, these new Dated Saddle sycee would become the only type of Saddle sycee officially approved to be used in Kunming city, undated older ones would no longer be allowed to trade. Meanwhile, two official assayers were authorized to assay these new dated Saddle sycees, they were Tong (Fu Sheng) and Sher (Qing Sheng) who were both considered most reputable in the business back then, any Dated Saddle sycee without their new version of assayer chop showing "Official Public Assayer Tong, Sher Check" would not be eligible to circulate. On the 4th month, year Geng Xu (1910 or the 2nd year of Hsuan Tung), an agreement paper was officially signed by 14 remaining sycee casting firms in Kunming under the supervision of the Provincial Board of Revenue and the Yunnan General Chamber of Commerce, since then the making of the Dated Saddle sycee had finally begun. However, only one year later the Qing government collapsed in 1911, making these fascinating specimens not only the last kind of the Official Public Assayer varieties but also the very last type of Saddle sycee ever produced in Kunming city. Dated Saddle sycees are one of the few historically well-documented types and are extremely rare due to short mintage, for these reasons they are highly sought-after by collectors, many counterfeits of this type have been seen over the years and some are very well made. This one dated the 4th month of year Geng Xu 1910 A. Is the first date of the type, making it even more special for this already-so-rare type, to my knowledge no more than 3 pieces of genuine First Date specimens have been recorded.
